Rusty Obra’s championship AeroPress filter

Rusty Obra’s championship AeroPress filter

Want to use the same AeroPress filter as the 2015 US AeroPress Champion and the 2016 Eastern Regional AeroPress Champion?

Our very own Rusty Obra Jr. is the winner of both contests, and this is the metal filter he used in these competitions. What Rusty likes about these filters: They are reusable, and they maintain the coffee's oils in the brew. This highlights the coffee's mouthfeel, flavors and intensity.

Ka’u Classics

Ka‘u Classic Medium Roast

Ka‘u Classic Medium Roast

For us, the Classic Medium Roast is the quintessential Ka‘u coffee: bright, yet balanced and elegant, with notes of lime and brown-sugar sweetness. We’re not the only ones who like it. This coffee scored 92 points in Coffee Review, tying for the top score in a cupping of Hawaiian and Caribbean coffees in March 2010.

Ka‘u Classic Dark Roast

Ka‘u Classic Dark Roast

Of our three types of Classic coffees, this one is the smoothest. The dark roast softens this coffee’s brightness and brings out more hints of chocolate.

Ka‘u Classic Peaberry

Ka‘u Classic Peaberry

Distinguished by their rounded shape, peaberries account for only 5% of our harvest. They are the rarest of our classic Ka‘u coffees.

Consider these beans a riff on the quintessential Ka‘u coffee. Like our Classic Medium and Classic Dark roasts, these peaberries are of the Typica variety, grown in the rich soil and cool climate of the Mauna Loa volcano’s southern slope.

Natural Yellow Caturra

Natural Yellow Caturra

It’s not nice to play favorites among children, but we can’t help the way we feel about our Natural Yellow Caturra. After all, it took one-and-a-half maddening years to turn this variety into exceptional coffee.

So how good is it? In Coffee Review’s Nov. 2010 ranking of natural coffees, our babies took the top score of 95 points.

Natural Red Caturra

Natural Red Caturra

Our Natural Red Caturra shows off how much variety there is in, well, coffee varieties.

Take the differences between our Natural Red Caturra and Natural Yellow Caturra. Botanically speaking, they’re closely related, but have different flavor profiles.

Maui Mokka Peaberry

Maui Mokka Peaberry

After years of crafting award-winning Ka‘u beans, we wanted to celebrate exceptional coffees from other Hawaiian regions. Maui Mokka Peaberry fits us perfectly for several reasons.

First, the beans are just so cute. Mokka has the smallest beans of any Coffea arabica cultivar; its peaberries are about the size of lentils. (In the photo, compare the Mokka peaberries on the right with the Typica beans on the left.)

Kona Maragogype

Kona Maragogype

It’s official. Our Kona Maragogype is among “the most exciting coffees” published by Coffee Review in 2013.

Coffee Review – the Wine Spectator of specialty coffee – has evaluated roasted beans since 1997. The criteria for its Top 30 Coffees of 2013: quality, value and “a ranking of other factors that include distinctiveness of style, uniqueness of origin or tree variety, certification, and general rarity.”

Natural Ka’u Typica

Natural Ka’u Typica

For this coffee, we wanted fruity and bright flavors. So we hand picked ripe fruit from our coffee trees, hand sorted them for ripeness, then dried them whole.
